The humanitarian crisis in Darfur and eastern Chad that started in 2003 is one of the worst in the world. Many have seen their family killed, abducted or sexually assaulted and their villages burned. Ongoing violence continues to cause people to flee. 2.5 million people are living in difficult and dangerous conditions in overcrowded camps.
South Africa has been particularly badly affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. Oxfam supports partner NGOs doing HIV and AIDS awareness work, provision of voluntary counseling and testing, and support to people living with HIV and AIDS. Their work extends to tackling Violence Against Women (VAW) that it is seen as one of the factors driving the HIV and AIDS pandemic.
"School of All" in Mindanao, the Philippines. In 2005 it was recorded that 14% of the population were unemployed and 40% of the population lived below the poverty line. Poverty, on-going conflicts and poorly maintained school buildings make it difficult for children to complete their primary education. 'Education is the way out of poverty for our children', say mothers. Oxfam builds classrooms, toilets and wells in schools to improve the environment for children.
